“I think you’re bonnie too.” The words wouldn’t leave me alone, even hours after I’d sent Callum on his bandaged, flirty way.

His grin was wider than I’d seen from him yet, though that likely had more to do with my response to his comment than anything else.

“Haud yer wheesht,” I’d said, like a true Scot.

After he’d gone—Callum, not Gerard—I spent several happy hours writing. First, the notes I’d been dictating in my now deceased recorder, then actual scenes. Lovely, beautiful, attractive scenes between my main characters that made me want to curl up and swoon.

And, yes, I’d done a dictionary search of bonnie, moments after Callum wandered back to his own cottage, just to be sure there wasn’t some horrifying Urban Dictionary perversion of the word unbeknownst to me. As far as I could tell, it still meant lovely, beautiful, or attractive.

So, yeah, there we were.

A place that included me with a smile I couldn’t tamp down, and a sparkle in my eye I could feel.

It was a parallel universe, obviously, because I was now trying on and discarding various flirtatious conversation starters for the next time I bumped into Callum. The man who found me, the bloody toorist, “bonnie”.

High on a day of successful writing, and only that, I finished the text detailing my (mis)adventures of the past twenty-four hours to my best friends, then opened the email I’d been avoiding from the head of the literature department.

Every muscle in my body tensed, hauling my spine from its lounge on Agnes’s tartan-covered couch into first-interview stiff and straight.

Never one to mince words, Connolly had me wondering if he’d suddenly become a practical joker. My eyes were burning, dry from how long I’d gone without blinking as I re-read the all-too familiar—though the majority of us had secretly believed it to be once-in-a-lifetime—news. Terrible, awful news.

My phone started buzzing with incoming texts.
